Coffee Surprise!

Look what I won!!!

Every month I put my name in for Starbucks customer of the month giveaway. Today I went through the drive-thru and the barista said "Heather I've got a surprise for you". When I pulled up to the window he handed me a goody bag full of wonderful gifts! I received a mug, coffee, a mini french press, and a tumbler. What a lovely surprise! :) Thanks Starbucks! You guys rock!

Day 14- a picture of you and your family.

Heather and Lola (chihuahua), Pam (Mom), Kelly (Sister), Russ (Dad) and Solomon (Cat).

This morning I decided to try my luck at finding a sewing machine on Freecycle. Not ten minutes after I posted a woman contacted me with an offer. I drove out to her home to pick up my (not so) new sewing machine! I think this qualifies as vintage? She said that it works well so that's a plus. :) I'm going to test it out this evening. Fun, fun!

It's a White Rotary sewing machine.

While I was there she let me pick a bunch of apples from her orchard! I plan on making a yumtastic cobbler tomorrow! :) I love Freecycle!

Sister Swap

My sister and I decided to have a swap. The guidelines were simple...the package had to include some home made items. This is what Kelly sent me! An adorable owl tote, some photos of my pets, a mini scrapbook of my cats, a cute Japanese card, a strawberry that converts to a shopping bag, and a festive scarf!

I sent Kelly a silly photo made out of a picture of the two of us (ahhh! floating heads!), an eyeglass case, a lavender sachet made from lavender I grow myself, a furry cat toy, and a basketweave knit washcloth.

We had so much fun with this swap! :)
Do you like swaps? If so, what was the best swap package you ever received?

Coconuty Goodness!

My sister came for a weekend visit and she really wanted some of my homemade cupcakes. I started getting all the ingredients together when I realized I was out of soy milk. What's a girl to do? I didn't feel like running to the store so I whipped out my favorite cupcake cookbook Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero and rummaged through until I found her recipe for Toasted Coconut Cupcakes with Coffee Buttercream Icing. This recipe calls for coconut milk instead of soy. I was in luck! I followed her recipe except that I omitted the coconut flakes from the cupcake batter and I had to use extra vanilla because I was out of coconut extract. I used my Starbucks Via to flavor the icing and topped them off with a cute little dark chocolate espresso bean. Yum! These cupcakes are heavier than my normal cupcakes (I'm assuming that's b/c of the coconut milk). Very decadent, rich cupcake. :)

Day 13- a letter to someone who has hurt you recently.

Dear ---------------,

It hurts me that our relationship is not as close as it once was. I used to feel we could talk about anything and everything for hours on end but now I feel like I am a burden to you. I understand that you are going through a lot and that it's not easy for you but I don't think a simple call once in awhile is too much to ask for.
I miss you.

Day 12- how you found out about blogger and why you have one.

I was never a huge fan of blogs until my sister introduced me to http://abeautifulmess.typepad.com/ . After repeatedly visiting Elsie's blog I realized I was hooked. That one blog led me to many other awesome discoveries (now I follow so many people it can get difficult to keep up)! At some point I stumbled onto Blogger and decided to try my hand at it. The rest is history...

Day 11- another picture of you and your friends.

Channon (my best friend from back in my P.burg days) came to visit! We became friends when my family moved to her neighborhood. I was 12 or 13 and she was 8 or 9. We became great friends right away and have remained friends through the years. :)

Knitting and Stewed Cats?

I'm in the Yarn Bombs Away swap on swap-bot. Our task is to knit 3 "tags" and mail to one person. That person will then yarn bomb wherever they choose and they will take pictures and post them. I've read about yarn bombing but never tried it. I think it will be fun! :) You can read more about it here: These are the 3 tags I made for my partner. The yellow one was so much fun to make! It kind of looks like little tentacles! The purple one is delicate and pretty and the last one is done in a simple garter stitch.

Today I actually felt like cooking (thanks to the cool autumn-like weather). I fried some seitan in garlic and onions and then made up a stew. Yum! I also made some vegan chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter icing. I brought them to my fave Starbucks employees. I certainly didn't want to eat them all myself! ;)

Cute photo of Giles napping in a basket. I love how kitties find the cutest places to nap! :)

Giles and Freya relaxing in the bedroom. Check out her pretty eyes...one is golden and the other is blue! :)

Day 8- short term goals for this month and why.

1. Knit more so I can sell more!
2. Find a job so I can buy more yarn!
3. Organize my closet so I can actually see what I have!

Bailey passed away this weekend. He seemed to exhibit the same symptoms as Cricket. The vet still believes they got into poison. I lost Gypsy last week as well as Cricket. So that's three kitties in a week! Enough is enough! :(
RIP Bailey. Kitty kisses.

Cat's in Strange Places...

My cat's have a tendency to get into some weird places to nap or just explore! :)

Camille napping in the trash can!

Freya in the dog's holiday stocking!

Freya managed to get into the sink but couldn't get back out! Silly girl!

Camille in the Yule Tree...

Some of my Mom's kittens resting in the dust pan.

Day 7- a picture of someone/something that has the biggest impact on you.

The Goddess reminds me that everything is connected and that the Divine exists all around us. She also reminds me to take pleasure in the small, everyday things. The geese flying in formation, the cat napping in a patch of sunlight, and the sound of children laughing. :)

Day 6- favorite super hero and why.

I chose Cat Woman for this blog entry. For those who know me well this is a no-brainer. I adore cats! I'm not really that into super hero's/comic books/etc but I think Cat Woman is pretty rad! :)

Day 5- a picture of somewhere you've been to.

A few years ago my sister, best guy friend, and I spent the post Christmas days in Hocking Hills, Ohio. We rented a log cabin, exchanged holiday gifts, and explored the area. One of our first stops was Ravenwood Castle ( http://www.ravenwoodcastle.com/ ) . It's a really unique place! Besides the castle, you can stay in a medieval cottage or a gypsy wagon. What fun!
We also stopped by the haunted Moonville Tunnel. This old railroad tunnel is said to be haunted by a man dressed as an engineer carrying a lantern. Some people have even spotted him in their photos! Spooky! :)
We took Lola the Wonder Chihuahua with us! She did not enjoy the long hike to the tunnel! Poor girl. We ended up carrying her much of the way.

Day 4- a habit that you wish you didn’t have.

Several years ago I was severely addicted to Tim Horton's Iced Caps. I finally decided that it just wasn't worth it anymore (I'm lactose intolerant and I wanted to make the transition from vegetarian to vegan). So I kicked that habit. Go me!
After a couple of months of no coffee drinks whatsoever I stumbled into a Starbucks bleary eyed and in desperate need of a caffeine fix. It was autumn and the barista immediately saw my need. She hooked me up to an IV drip of soy pumpkin spice latte. I was hooked! Sadly, as a new Starbucks convert, I was unaware that Pumpkin Spice Latte's are only offered in the autumn/early winter months. So come January I went through withdrawal again! I tried their other offerings but none of them really did it for me. One glorious day at my local Starbucks, the barista said "Heather, you must try this! It's a soy frappaccino!" Mmmmmmm.....it was very similar to my Tim Hortons Iced Cap...so cold and delicious! So this little tale has a very happy ending. Or...does it?

What's your addiction? :)

This was taken New Year's Eve 2008.
Good times! :)

I'm a keeper!

I've been busy sorting through all of my accumulated junk the past few days. I have two boxes: Keep and Donate. Camille choose just the right box!!! ;)

day 2- the meaning behind your blog name.

My blog name: Ramblings from the animal house

I think this is pretty self explanatory. I have a house full of animal companions! :)

I didn't know what to expect when I picked up Cricket's cremains from the vet's office. The box was smaller than I expected and much heavier! I placed him on my cat shrine in the hallway. Bast will watch over him forever.

Sometimes cats and yarn do mix!

Miss Camille is such a petite girl. She always finds the cutest places to nap!

RIP Cricket!

Cricket passed away yesterday afternoon. The vet tried his best but Cricket's organs failed. :(
I will miss him so much...

Cat Poem

They will not go quietly,
the cats who've shared our lives.
In suptle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.
Old habits still make us think
we hear a meow at the door.
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them. . . and always will.

My precious Cricket kitty is sick! He was fine Saturday night but when I woke up Sunday morning he had severe diarrhea, was dehydrated and was foaming at the mouth. My vet isn't open on Sundays so I did my best to keep Cricket hydrated with Pedialyte. This morning I found he was even worse (cold, weak, and unresponsive). I rushed him to my vet as soon as they opened. He's being kept at the vet's office and being given fluids. They are also running bloodwork to see if he's going into liver/kidney failure. There's a chance that this all happened because of the upholstery cleaner I used on Saturday evening. :( I'm feeling so guilty over all this. The vet said that if he doesn't respond to the fluid today then he's not going to make it. I'm so sad and praying that my little man pulls through...

A Flower By Any Other Name...

Meet Marigold the Wonder Skunk! She is a 3 year old rescue from a skunk group in Ohio. She's such a character!

Hobbies: Sleeping, Playing the "I'm going to spray you" game, begging for unhealthy snacks like Ruffles.

Likes: Peanut butter, fridge raids, cats, and master minding backyard escapes.

Dislikes: Being held against her will, Cameras, and healthy snacks.

Her original name was Oscar. Not sure why anyone would name a female Oscar...but there you have it. I renamed her Marigold. :)
